Five of us braved the forecast of heavy rain, squally thunderstorms and hail to make the ferry trip across to Waiheke with our fearless leader, Kay, for a hike north from Matiatia towards Oneroa. After a fairly choppy ride across the channel, we set off from Matiatia Bay up the hill to Delamore Drive, then from there took another track down to join the northern loop track.
Heavy rain had set in and we had a wet walk towards Cable Bay but the beautiful turquoise sea views made it all worthwhile. There was a little bit of slippery clay but overall the track was still in good condition for this time of year. A break in the rain proved good timing for us to make a beach stop for morning tea.
Onwards to Owhanake Bay, Island Bay and Fossil Bay. We passed luxurious private residences, olive trees and vineyards, plus some special places to visit for one of these WOPpers who had grown up on Waiheke when much of this area was part of a large farm belonging to the Delamore family.
We followed the trampers’ track at the end of Oneroa down to the beach where another break in the rain allowed us to enjoy lunch on a picnic table looking out to the sea. Two WOPpers found the calling of Stoney Ridge Vineyard too hard to resist when they were on the island, so they left us at Oneroa for a short bus ride towards Onetangi and lunch at the vineyard.
Four of us then continued around the short clifftop walk to Little Oneroa Bay and up the hill steps towards Fisherman’s Rock. Back through Oneroa Village and a short walk down to the ferry. Thanks to Kay for another lovely day at Waiheke. Stunning views and great company.
