What a gorgeous day for our hike! 17 enthusiastic ladies gathered at Mill Bay and after a rather hilarious brownie circle of missing boots, hats, and hearing aids (a perfect pair of boots, exactly the right size, was loaned by Diane and hats distributed by Linda) we set off into the bush.
The Jubilee Trail is lovely and from there we hit the beach at low tide to Cornwallis Wharf, in time for morning tea.
The original wharf was built in 1926 and was rebuilt by Auckland Regional Council and a group of locals called SCOW (Save Cornwallis Old Wharf) as a treasured historical landmark, still used for fishing, as we witnessed today.
Then up to the top of the hill to visit another landmark, McLachlan Monument, which records the gifting of 1927 acres of land to the City of Auckland by John Mitchell McLachlan in memory of his mother, Isabella Mitchell McLachlan. Unveiled on 17 July 1918.
After drinking in the beautiful views of the Manukau Heads and the western reaches of the harbour, we headed back down to the same grassy knoll near the wharf for lunch.
We walked along the beach and then split into two groups, as the tide was coming in and some of us did not want to get wet or slip so took the dry route by road and met the braver group at the parking lot. Of course, most of us met up in Titirangi for coffee!
Thank you, Linda, for a great walk and to all my lady WOPpers for a lovely day!
