TRIP SNIP: Hunuas - Mangatawhiri Dam Circuit (Ernies), 25 June 2024

Well, I had to ‘push’ to keep up on this track, as I fully expected to, given the very fair walk description on our programme. I also fully enjoyed this quiet, varied, clockwise hike with the usual great company, up Waterline Road, onto Ernies Track and up its long incline, round to Piggotts, then up and down Lilburne Road to reach our carpark.

We heard no kokako – definitely there, according to Alison F – but were entertained enough by terrain and outlooks, mud, roots, atmospheric, dark, wet bush (and bamboo grove), stream and river crossing, bogs and board walks and a few uphill scrambles, though we did have to focus on our feet. Fungi must get a mention, especially a rare sight of an upright tree trunk decorated by a thousand tiny bells. And Margreta pointed out a ramarama bush, which I had not seen before.

Many thanks, Jenny B, for your usual good leadership and the fun.
