TRIP SNIP: Rangitoto, Thursday 24 October 2024

A super team of sixteen WOPpers led by Elizabeth embarked on a hike on Rangitoto Island, known for its rugged volcanic terrain and stunning views.

We began our walk with a steady climb up to the summit of Rangitoto, which stands 260 meters above sea level. The path, well-maintained and easy to follow, gradually ascends through fields of black volcanic rock and unique plant life. The island’s distinctive flora, including pōhutukawa trees, contrasted beautifully against the dark lava fields.

As we climbed higher, we were rewarded with spectacular panoramic views. The Hauraki Gulf, Auckland’s skyline, and neighbouring islands unfolded around us.

After reaching the summit and taking in the stunning views, we descended slightly to explore one of the small lava caves on the island.
