TRIP SNIP: Scotts Landing – Casnell Island, Tuesday 29 October 2024

Ignoring the usual iffy spring forecast, 18 WOPpers gathered at the very end of the Mahurangi East and wondered why we didn’t visit this tranquil hideaway more often. It’s such a peaceful, sheltered part of Auckland’s coastline (as verified by all the yachts moored in the harbour) and our walk included bush, tidal beaches and rocks. There are a few steep climbs, but they’re all short and sweet. Meanwhile the rocky, oyster-laden coast provides stable, secure walking with nothing problematic.

We peered through the windows of the historic 1877 Scott’s Homestead, explored the scenic reserve, climbed and circumnavigated Casnell Island with its idyllic, grassy rest spots, and eyed the many lovely houses scattered through surrounding bays.

We had a very enjoyable day and the only rain to speak of fell afterwards as we were driving out of the carpark.
