FMC’s objectives are to promote member club’s activities, training and safe use of the backcountry, the preservation and sound management of our back country, and they also work to protect rights of access to the countryside.
FMC has a proud history. It was founded in 1931 and has worked tirelessly in the interests of trampers and climbers for 80 years. The FMC liaises directly with other NGO’s, government departments and politicians whenever required. FMC used to be the sole body organising training in the outdoors and Search and Rescue but in the past 80 years FMC has been instrumental in bringing into creation the Mountain Safety Council and later NZ LandSAR.
Over the years they have developed policies on issues such as access to back country, huts and booking systems, hydro power, mountain bikes, National Parks, and walkways.
