We are sure you have all heard about the rahui and council closures of many of the Waitakere tracks. These temporary measures have been put in place to allow time for solutions to the spread of Kauri Dieback to be found.
Although this has an impact on our walking programme, only a third of our walks are in the Waitakere area and our leaders have been able to come up with an interesting and varied walk programme for 2018. There are some coastal tracks still available in the Waitakere ranges and many walks both North and South and around Auckland.
We hope that you will see this an opportunity to stretch your focus while stretching your legs. WOPs is fully committed to protecting our native forests and though this may mean longer drives for some, for others it will provide a chance to explore their own environs. Remember our commitment is to extending ourselves in a safe and supportive environment, having fun, meeting old and making new friends, and enjoying a variety of activities.
This is an exceptional time and our forest, the lungs of Auckland, needs us to give it a chance to heal. A time for us to get creative and strengthen our commitment to Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa and each other.
Carol W has provided a copy of an article from the latest Walking magazine which has a current list of the closed tracks. To view Click here
