Earlier this Summer Vicki and I , together with Vicki's partner Solly, tackled the Caples/Greenstone Track. I had picked this track due to its proximity to Queenstown and the fact that the huts did not require booking months in advance.
The track starts at the end of Greenstone Road at a well laid out car park with shelter.
The Caples/Greenstone follows the respective valley's and can be walked in either direction. Part of the track makes up a section of the TeAraroa. Heading from one valley into the other is achieved by crossing McKellar Saddle which is at 945 metres above sea level. If you feel like extending yourself a bit more combinations with the Routebourne and Mavora Lake tracks are possible.

Having recently completed 2 great walks I found the track quality on par with great walks. The cost of the huts are a fraction of the cost and they are good quality. Unlike great walks though, a place in the hut is not guaranteed and it is a first comes first served system. That said we completed the track in what can only be described as the height of the walking season and easily secured a mattress each night. The huts on the track are supervised by rotating wardens from October through to April each season.
The track is close to water features at most times, ie lakes or rivers so a swim to cool off is possible at many points. The length of enjoyment of the water features is unfortunately frequently curtailed by Sandflies.
Due to the different feeder systems onto and out of this track, you will find new walking partners each day and hear new stories each night.
Some fellow trampers travel with you for a little longer than others. A "feature" that came in handy when Vicki twisted her ankle about midway through the last day. The 3 off us had a guardian angel. Michael had been in the same huts as us for 2 nights and insisted to take out Vicki's pack for her.
If you are looking for a different track consider this one. I understand there are also glamping options available if that is more to your liking.
