TRIP SNIP: Awaroa Walkway, Thursday 4 April 2019

It was a warm, sunny day for our last walk of the term.. Five WOPpers including leader Kay (quality not quantity!) met at Eastern Beach to walk part of the Awaroa walkway. (The complete high tide route is about 17 km long.) We did an elongated 8-shaped route first heading to the southern end of Eastern Beach, then up through a small section of Macleans Park (saw a house next to the park that Carmel had looked through but didn’t buy), along Bleakhouse Rd and down to Mellons Bay for our morning tea stop. We  returned to Eastern Beach either along the foreshore with a bit of rock-hopping and walking in the water, or by retracing our earlier path.

We then stuck to the shoreline - beach, rocks and water, heading up the peninsular with low tide not long after our lunch stop. Looking seaward there were great views of Browns Island, Rangitoto,Motuihe, Waiheke and other gulf islands. Looking towards the cliffs, there was evidence of the serious slips of some years back and landowners ongoing attempts to save their properties from further slippage.

The coastal part of our walk finished at the bottom of a steep set of stairs leading up to Musick Point - more great views at the top. From there it was back through the Howick Golf Club, along Clovelly Rd and down a walkway which ended not far from our cars at Eastern Beach.

We rewarded ourselves with coffee and/or an icecream at a cafe on the Bucklands Beach waterfront and agreed the walk was a great way to finish the term.

Welcome to Janie who joined us for her first walk with WOPs.
